5 Practical Ways to Declutter and Enjoy Living With Less

The more stuff you have, the more stuff you have to do. I see this everywhere when I walk into clients' homes: too much stuff weighing them down, creating extra work, pulling attention away from what actually matters.

But here's what I've learned. When you let go of things that don't serve you and keep only what you truly love or need, there's genuine joy in living with less.

If you want less stress and more space but don't know where to begin, start with these five areas. They make the biggest difference.

Your wardrobe needs a reality check

We wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time. The rest just sits there, taking up space, creating morning stress.

Go through every closet and cull everything you don't wear because you don't like it or it doesn't fit. You'll get more time, more space, and a wardrobe full of things you actually love.

Once you've culled, don't buy new clothes until you notice an actual need.

Toys that overwhelm instead of inspire

Too many toys don't just create clutter. They overwhelm kids with choice, stealing opportunities to use imagination or learn to share and value what they have.

Get rid of unused toys. Give kids the chance to really appreciate their favourites and transform their bedrooms into calmer spaces.

Rehomed toys will be forgotten quickly and hopefully bring joy to their new owners.

The bathroom cabinet black hole

When did you last properly look in your bathroom drawers and cupboards? I bet they're full of things you never use, possibly out of date.

Half-used lotions, perfumes you don't like, makeup you don't use, dried up nail polish, soap from old gift sets. All held onto "just in case".

Check dates on everything. Toss anything past its use-by date. Keep what you realistically use daily, weekly, or monthly. Bin everything else.

Only buy replacements when you need them. Don't get drawn in by the latest fad.

Kitchen gadgets that promised the world

Some quality kitchen equipment makes life easier. But we get carried away with online shopping and infomercials, and suddenly our benches and drawers are cluttered with "must have" gadgets.

Milk frothers, pasta machines, bread makers, spiralisers, food dehydrators, ice cream makers. Walk through any op shop and you'll find them abandoned there.

If you've barely used something, donate or sell it. Revel in the simplicity and space when you cook.

Linen closets that won't close

Most of us have bulging linen closets because we don't follow the one-in, one-out rule. We buy new bedding but don't get rid of old sets.

You don't need more than two sets per bed or two towels per person.

If old linen has wear left, charities and pet shelters would love it. If it's seen better days, donate it for rags.

Start with one area. The momentum builds from there, and before you know it, you'll have more space, less stress, and room for what actually matters.
