Infrared saunas aren't just a wellness trend. After years of using one with clients and on myself, here's what actually happens to your body and why it works.

Real self-care isn't selfish. It's the foundation that makes everything else in your life possible.

To be successful at weight loss and the prevention of weight gain, it is vital that you find ways to manage stress. Otherwise, you leave yourself open to some of the negative effects of stress. In my case, long-term stress led to a lowered immune system, which in turn made me susceptible to everything, including chronic fatigue syndrome.

I'll be honest. When I first heard about ionic foot spas, I was sceptical. You put your feet in water, the water changes colour, and somehow you're detoxing? It sounded like something you'd see at a market stall, not in a health clinic.
Then I tried one. And then I researched the technology behind it. And then I bought a medical-grade unit for my practice because I couldn't ignore what I was seeing.
Over the years I offered ionic foot spa sessions at my clinic, I watched clients with chronic fatigue perk up, clients with brain fog think clearer, and clients who'd tried everything else finally feel like their body was shifting something it had been holding onto.
The basic principle is ionic exchange. The device sits in the water with your feet and generates negative ions through electrolysis. These ions enter your body through the 2,000+ pores on the soles of your feet.
Once inside, the negative ions attract positively charged toxins, heavy metals, and waste products. Think of it like a magnet pulling out the stuff your body has been struggling to process on its own. The toxins are then drawn back out through osmosis.
The unit I used was the Ki Science Advanced Hydrogen Detox Foot Spa. It's FDA and CE certified, which mattered to me. I wasn't interested in offering anything that didn't have proper safety credentials. Beyond the basic ionic footbath, it also delivers negative hydrogen ions that help balance and alkalise your body's pH level.
I also used a Far Infrared Belt during sessions, which promotes what's called the fourth stage of water in the body. This enhances the detox process and supports deeper cellular healing.
Everyone asks about this. Yes, the water changes colour during a session. Different colours are said to indicate different types of toxins being released. Brownish water might relate to liver toxins, dark green to gallbladder, and so on.
I'll be straight with you. Some of the colour change comes from the ionic process reacting with minerals in the water itself, not just from your body. But here's what I know from experience: the water colour varies significantly from person to person and from session to session with the same person. If it were just a chemical reaction with tap water, it would look the same every time. It doesn't.
The real evidence is in how people feel afterwards, not in the colour of the water.
The benefits clients reported were consistent enough that I stopped being surprised by them.
Energy levels were the first thing most people noticed. Many clients came in feeling flat and walked out feeling noticeably lighter and more alert. Not wired, just clearer. Like a fog had lifted.
Sleep improvements came up regularly, usually within the first few sessions. Clients who'd been waking at 3am or struggling to fall asleep found their patterns shifting.
Reduced inflammation showed up in clients with joint pain, arthritis symptoms, and general aches. The ionic exchange process seems to support the body's natural anti-inflammatory pathways.
Immune function improvements were harder to quantify but consistent in the feedback. Clients who did regular sessions through winter reported fewer colds and faster recovery when they did get sick.
Lymphatic drainage was another common benefit. Clients with swollen glands, fluid retention, or that general puffy feeling often saw noticeable changes.
Heavy metal reduction is one of the more significant benefits, especially for anyone who's been exposed to environmental toxins, old dental fillings, or contaminated water. Your body stores heavy metals in fat and bone tissue, and they're notoriously difficult to shift. The ionic exchange gives your body an extra pathway to release them.
It's one of the most relaxing treatments I ever offered. You settle into a comfortable chair and place your feet in warm water. We'd chat about your health history and goals while the device did its work.
Sessions run about 45 minutes. The ionic array generates negative ions while you sit there and do absolutely nothing. Some people read, some dozed off, some just enjoyed the quiet.
I'd finish with the Far Infrared Belt to enhance the detox, and then we'd talk about hydration and follow-up. Drinking plenty of water in the 24 hours after a session is important because your body continues processing and releasing toxins.
For best results, I recommended weekly sessions for the first month, then fortnightly for maintenance. Most clients felt a difference after the very first session, but the cumulative effect over four to six weeks was where the real transformation happened.
A few important notes. If you have a pacemaker, you should avoid ionic foot spas. Same goes for organ transplant recipients, anyone who's pregnant, and people on blood thinners. If you're unsure, check with your GP first.
For everyone else, it's a gentle, non-invasive treatment with no downtime. You walk out feeling better than when you walked in.
I'm no longer offering ionic foot spa sessions at the clinic, but I still believe in the therapy. It was one of those treatments where the sceptic in me had to concede to what I was actually seeing in real people, real results, session after session.
If you're feeling sluggish, dealing with chronic fatigue, carrying inflammation, or you just want to give your body's detox pathways a proper nudge, look for a clinic near you that uses a medical-grade ionic foot spa. Not all units are created equal, so ask about certifications.
Your body is always trying to heal. Sometimes it just needs a little help getting the rubbish out.
